Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts, Michael Kouroubacalis started playing guitar as a six-year-old. Soon after, his older sister Marissa took up the drums. They eventually formed the teen pop duo Michael & Marissa and, after releasing the album Kicking It Together in 2008 and the EP It's Like That in 2010, went on to open for acts including Cody Simpson, Greyson Chance, and David Archuleta. In 2015, they hit the road with Christina Perri and then Rixton, closing the tour with an opening spot for Ariana Grande. In the meantime, Michael enrolled at the Berklee College of Music to study electronic production and design.
He re-emerged in 2017 with the moniker MkX, releasing his debut single, "The Look," that August. Within a few months, it found a streaming audience numbering in the hundreds of thousands.
