Biography

Country Of origin: India

Khayyam reigned in the Bollywood world of music and poetry. Having composed the music for masterpieces like Kabhi Kabhi, Umrao Jaan, and Bazaar, Khayyam worked with some of the greatest poets and singers of India. With a career spanning almost 55 years, Khayyam was selective enough to compose music for just 55 movies, though his non-film repertoire of ghazals and bhajans is huge. Mohammed Zahur Khayyam Hashmi was born in the village of Rahon in the Nawanshahr District, and learned music from Baba Chishti. In his early days he was intrigued by the world of cinema and went to Bombay to fulfill his dreams. His earliest success was for the movie Phir Subha Hogi, written by Sahir Ludhyanvi. With the success of his songs in Footpath, Mohabbat Issko Kehte Hain, Lala Rukh, Shagun, Shola Aur Shabnam, Aakhri Khat, and Phir Subah Hogi, Khayyam became a household name. After a short break from music, Khayyam returned as composer for the film Kabhi Kabhi, which marked his biggest commercial success to date. Kabhi Kabhi was a love story woven around the life of a poet, and Khayyam was the obvious choice for its music. The 1980s saw Khayyam compose for a string of timeless classics like Noorie, Bazaar, Umrao Jaan, and Razia Sultan. After a long gap, Khayyam returned to compose music for Banaras 1918 -- A Love Story and Yatra. ~ Bhasker Gupta~ Rovi
