Biography

Country Of origin: Italy

In his youth Zipoli studied with Termini and Beccatelli. By 1707 he was in Florence studying with Casini and a year later published an oratorio in collaboration with Casini, Caldara and Gasparini. In 1709 he moved to Naples to study with A. Scarlatti but later that year went to Bologna to study with Vannucci and finally studied in Rome with Pasquini. He stayed in Rome and composed two more oratorios and became the organist at the Jesuit church at Rome in 1715. He became a Jesuit in 1716 and traveled to Cadiz in 1717 next studying theology and philosophy in Cordoba. Zipoli's renown comes from the keyboard collection which he published in 1716 "Sonate d'intavolatura." The keyboard pieces were elegant and sonorous. The opening of the collection was an organ tocatta followed by versos, elevations, and a post-communion, offertory and pastorale. The second part of the collection consists of short dances, suites and partitas for the harpsichord. Zipoli was skilled with counterpoint, modulation, melodies and imitation. ~ Keith Johnson~ Rovi
