Country Of origin: Italy

An Italian composer known for comic opera as well as sacred and secular vocal music. In his short life, Pergolesi managed to establish a style of beautiful melodies accompanied by a clear orchestra of harmonic tensions, as in the breathtaking Stabat Mater, with its slow build of emotion accomplished apparently by the simplest means (in the centuries following Pergolesi's death, some composers attempted to beef up his lovely music by adding huge, pretentious orchestras). The Stabat Mater is essentially a vocal chamber-music work inspired by religion, rather than a work for the church. It was composed on Pergolesi's deathbed and he was paid ten ducats for it -- one less than it took to bury him. His lovely and lively Concertinos, the Concerto for Flute, Strings & Cembalo in D, and his opera La Serva Padrona are necessary listening for appreciating the natural talent of this wonderful composer. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny~ Rovi
