Biography

Active: 1960s
Group Members: Bernie Schwartz

A California-based pop-psychedelic sextet, the Comfortable Chair was formed in 1968 by songwriter and singer Bernie Schwartz, vocalist Barbara Wallace, guitarist Gene Earfin, bassist Gary Davis, drummer Greg Leroy, and keyboard player Tad Baczek, and left behind a self-titled album recorded for Lou Adler's Ode Records label -- it fell in the pecking order just ahead of Peggy Lipton's folk-rock album, at a time in the label's fortunes when, if you blinked, you might miss the release altogether. They made a slightly longer-lasting contribution to the 1969 Bob Hope/Jackie Gleason comedy vehicle How to Commit Marriage, with an appearance in the movie. The most notable aspect of the group's history, however, may concern two musicians who were never actually members -- the Doors' Robbie Krieger and John Densmore, stepping outside the context of their own band for the first time, produced the Comfortable Chair's Ode album. ~ Bruce Eder~ Rovi
