Biography

Country Of origin: France

After studying the violin with Hammer and Vieuxtemps he entered the Paris Conservatoire and studied composition with Reber. Godard was an exceptional and precocious violinist. He won the Prix de Rome, greatly admired Schumann's works and was given high praise for his "Symphonie dramatique Le Tasse." His earliest and most abundant compositions were for the piano. Most of his salon-set pieces for the piano and chamber settings were not well received; nor were his operas like "Pedro de Zalamea" or "Dante et Beatrice". Godard's most important works were serious in nature even including some chamber music and piano studies. Together with his symphonies the serious works expose a penchant for extolling the virtues of late nineteenth century German composers. His music for strings were, not surprisingly, Godard's most facile including the sonata for an unaccompanied violin and the "Concerto Romantique." ~ Keith Johnson~ Rovi
