Biography

b. 9 March 1929, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. A pop-jazz vocalist in the mode of Frank Sinatra, Valino belongs to a breed of pop singers who were generally swept away in the late 50s with the advent of rock 'n' roll. His one hit, "Garden Of Eden", was a pop confection, but it had enough teen-appeal to reach many of the same buyers of rock 'n' roll in 1956. He had minor success in the UK as well with the song, which went to number 23. As a youngster, Valino was proficient at piano and guitar as well as at singing, and by the age of 13 was on the road touring. He sang in several bands, notably those of Charlie Ventura and Woody Herman, before beginning his recording career in 1950 on the Philadelphia-based Gotham label. He was thwarted in gaining his first hit with "Learnin' The Blues" in 1955 when it was covered by Frank Sinatra. He moved to Los Angeles in the 60s and acted in several motion pictures, notably The Commitment (1976).~ Rovi
