Review

Propelled by one of the most audacious marketing gimmicks of the vinyl era, Tommy Facenda's "High School U.S.A." peaked at number 28 on the Billboard charts in 1959. Twenty-eight versions of the song were released, each one of which named real area high schools in targeted states and major cities. This CD contains all 28 regional variations in addition to a generic "national" version and the crudely recorded indie-label original. The various hit versions used the same basic recording with the litany of high school names overdubbed, making it unlikely that many buyers will want to listen to this entire disc in one sitting. High School U.S.A. is a treasure trove for collectors who want to save themselves the trouble of tracking down the original vinyl, but is too repetitive for anyone besides the most fervently nostalgic. ~ Greg Adams
