Review

Slack key guitar is one of the characteristic elements of traditional Hawaiian music, a highly specialized form of finger-picking and tuning that translates to a wonderfully melodious and joyful sound. The 15 tracks on this 2006 Grammy-nominated compilation celebrate the current living masters of the slack key style; three-quarters of the songs here are beautiful originals by such luminaries of Hawaiian music as Bobby Moderow, Ledward Ka'apana, and Dwight Kanae. And although he's not a slack key king himself, the popular singing surfer Jack Johnson also contributes a track in the same laid-back style. With any luck, this album could be the BUENA VISTA SOCIAL CLUB of Hawaiian music.
