Review

Tributo a Victor Jara features artists such as Silvio Rodríguez, Lucho Barrios, Sol y Lluvia, and Los Jaivas paying homage to Jara's passionate, politically minded folk. The best tracks, such as Joe Vasconcellos' rendition of "Ni Chicha Ni Limona," stay close to the spirit and sound of Jara's originals; glossier performances like Victor Manuel and Ana Belen's "Vientos Del Pueblo" and Isabel Parra's "El Encuentro" lack the intensity of their rawer counterparts. Patricio Manns' "No Puedes Volver Atras" and "Quilapayun" are among the collection's other highlights. Though it's not always successful in recasting Jara's songs into more modern idioms, Tributo a Victor Jara is still a mostly entertaining compilation held together by strong songwriting. ~ Heather Phares
