Review

The album Sensilla mostly alternates between slow, folk-infused, psychedelic pop songs and uptempo, rollicking jams. With the first category, Flyte Reaction excels, as on "Swim Around the Moon" and the R.E.M. meets Captain Beefheart "Observatory Crest." "Flow" finds a quiet, philosophical groove, and "Let It Go" is a heart-filling, nostalgic anthem. But the songs in the latter category often interrupt the mood. "Candy Girl" is just too much of an '80s pop throwback to fit on this record, and, despite its catchy Hendrix riffs, "Diamond Geezer" suffers a little bit from the same fate. "Try Me" may really move, but when all is said and done it is forgettable hard rock. There are some standouts in Flyte Reaction's less mellow tunes, though. "Water From Your Well" chugs and burns with a Pink Floyd paranoia, and "Toasty" is an impeccable extension of poppy Syd Barrett loopiness where Mick Crossly sings about "cycling through the universe/a ringer at my hand." Flyte Reaction could shoot the moon by fully working these spaced out trips. ~ Charles Spano
